Subject: The first SpongeBob VHS I ever watched.
Subject: The first SpongeBob VHS I ever watched.
Well technically, "Nautical Nonsense" was the first one I watched in general, but this was my first one from start to finish. This was a great arrangement
...
of episodes they chose for this release; start with a first-season episode, continue with two second-season episodes before another first-season one, and finish the tape with a third-season episode that didn't air yet at the time. All five episodes are fantastic, and make for a great first compilation.
Of all the 20 SpongeBob VHS releases there are (minus "Undersea Antics"), I've always admired this one the most for the episode arrangement summing up the general "feel" of the show's glory days; the well-written characters and humor, the excellent stories, and the atmosphere in those Hawaiian background tracks that were used much less after the first movie.
If I had any thoughts for the show up to its' current state, here's how I'd generally sum up each era the show's been through in one word or more:
Season 01: Established
Seasons 02 & 03 + SquarePants Movie: Peak
Season 04: Lossy Encore
Season 05: Eye of the Storm
Season 06: Rotting Roots
Seasons 07 & 08: Cruel
Season 09A: Lightly Patched
Sponge Out of Water + Season 09B: Redemption
Seasons 10 to 12: Renaissance
Sponge on The Run + Season 13-present: Manipulative
There's something I theorize why Nickelodeon still continues the show to this day that I don't think anyone ever put into thought before, and that would be... they never cared at all what the show's ACTUAL quality would be from the fourth season onward, and continued the show PURPOSELY because newer, casual viewers thought the first three seasons and the first movie were the best the show could offer, and just automatically assume that the newer seasons (former & current) had the precise same level of quality as the ones before.
It really shows in today's age when more than half of the 13th season's episodes (and some of late season 12) revolve around references to the glory days (some clever, PLENTY in-your-face) more than being good episodes, and never gained up to a million viewers or more for every episode's U.S. premiere. What's gasoline poured on that fire is one of the show's current, modern crew members, Ian "dirty interests" Vazquez, who joined the crew during season 12 as a storyboard artist (more specifically, starting with "Gary's Got Legs" which was directly after "Pineapple RV," the final episode Stephen Hillenburg saw finished before his death). Once he was promoted to storyboard supervisor by season 13, he inserts references EVERYWHERE he can in every episode he's involved with, and NEVER controls it well. I admit that some of the 12th season's episodes he worked on as an artist are pretty great in my opinion, but starting with season 13's "Potato Puff" as a supervisor onward (and later director), I honestly never found a single episode he's worked on to be ANY good or funny, and I feel like he's more focused on the references and incidentals and... maybe self-inserts (that sketchy "Squidward loves Petunia" subplot in "The Flower Pot") than paying thorough attention to the stories in front of him.
What's more is that, even if you don't acknowledge the spinoff connections, or any of what I brought up about Vazquez, this season STILL isn't good at all. I watched the premiere of "Friendiversary" without knowing beforehand if he was involved or not, and after seeing his name in the opening title card... and watching it... I never thought I would despise a bad SpongeBob episode more than anyone has ever hated a bad episode from between seasons 4 to 9, but it ended up being enough for me to quit watching the show for good once the season ended. The bad episodes without Vazquez's involvement include "Yellow Pavement," "Sandy, Help Us!," & "Patrick The Mailman," just to name a few.
My point is, the show is in its' darkest era like it never has before, and it's more than just because Hillenburg died. The vast majority of the original production crew from the glory days are gone now, and even crew members behind the amazing episodes of seasons 9B to 12 are not involved with the show anymore. And even if Vazquez was kicked off the production team, that will NEVER be enough for me to continue watching the show.
If Nickelodeon continuing the show as a current series is just an excuse to capitalize on the show it used to be during the first three seasons (like they seem to have done since after the first movie's theatrical release), and has desperately relied more on the show itself recently for the capitalization, and is no longer getting the ratings it used to, and fans are finally getting TIRED of the references, then it's abundantly clear that THE SHOW NEEDS TO END NOW!
If there's more SpongeBob media anyone's looking for that has those original crew members involved, there's the comics featured in the Nick Magazines. Ones like "Just Desserts" and "The Big Race" carry the same level of humor that the glory days of the show did, and I highly recommend them to anyone in search of more SpongeBob content.
One other thing I kinda have to wonder regarding Nickelodeon's continuation of the show is... did the "SpongeBob SquarePants" series identity actually range the closest to what Nickelodeon's overall former "Nick is Kids" identity from the 1990's was?
